ACT TOCA - Rail Trail Biking Experience along the Wodonga Rail Trail
Event details updated 16 September 2023.
16 September 2023 update: Registrations will remain open until Monday 18 September 2023. All new registrations must find their own accommodation (suggestions below - Motel View Yack still has vacancies).
**15 September 2023 amendment: Opened registrations for a few days but all new registrations must find their own accommodation (see below).
Please email email@example.com before booking accommodation as we now again have one room spare.
6 August 2023 amendment: Added downloadable Trail Map and a new link to website under Yackandandah Rail Trail info).
TOCA ACT is planning a rail trail riding event for those interested in a leisurely (or faster) bike ride along an old disused railway track (well, that's what they tell me - get off the track if you hear a whistle).
We are planning a long weekend event during the school holidays in Yackandandah, Victoria. BYO bike or hire one in Wodonga or Yackandandah. There are several tracks we can tackle - Beechworth to Yackandandah (or part the way) and the High Country rail trail around Tallangatta. The track is suitable for Touring, Mountain, Electric or Hybrid bikes. The trail is paved most the way and very smooth riding.
**Late Registrations after 14 September 2023
Registrations have reopened for the event to capture last minute decisions to participate in the weekend. New registrations must find their own accommodation as the TOCA arranged venue is now full. I would suggest the Motel View Yackandandah as an alternative, however they do insist on a minimum three days accommodation booking over the long weekend. Make your bookings from Friday 29 September 2023 to Monday 2 October 2023 to fit in with the group movements, or shorter or longer if you intend on breaking away early or doing some activities outside of the group.
A new wave of information emails will go out from Monday 18 September 2023 regarding timings, meet up points etc.
Please note the registrations close date on the side menu. No late registrations after this date will be accepted.
The Motel View Yackandandah motel is located a few kilometres south of the town and close to the main group's motel. We already have a few TOCA late registration members booked into this motel. I suggest telephoning the motel rather than email - faster and you will need to provide credit card details in any case.
Details for this motel are: Motel Views Yackandandah - Highly rated!

Rail Trail Information and History
Beechworth to Yackandandah Rail Trail
The Beechworth to Yackandandah Rail Trail is a 31km sealed trail meandering through the spectacular Indigo Shire. The rail trail is a world class cycling adventure. The trail is largely open for all to enjoy, with only one section left to complete. The last section is due for completion in September 2023, so fingers crossed we will be one of the first to use the entire trail.
High Country Rail Trail
- Experience history, Lake Hume, one of Australia’s largest reservoirs, high timber bridges and the foothills of the High Country
- The trail traverses farmland near the shores of Lake Hume and forest at Shelley, once Victoria’s highest railway station
- The trail is undulating to Bullioh with some moderate gradients. Bullioh to Shelley is all uphill at the steepest gradient trains could manage. Plan your trip
- Trail surface is of varying quality beyond Old Tallangatta
- The 600m Sandy Creek bridge is a scenic landmark
- Albury/Wodonga has many attractions including the Murray River at Wodonga and Bonegilla Migrant Museum
- Recreation facilities around Lake Hume
- Old Tallangatta, the town that moved!
- Many National and State Parks to explore. There are good views from lookouts and mountaintops (including the Main Range of Kosciuszko National Park) and plenty of picnic and camping area.
**See New Registrations above.
A great Motel with charging has been selected close to the rail trails. The entire Motel is booked out to TOCA Members.
From Family to Keen Mountain Bikers
We plan to keep the trip open to all skill, fitness and age levels. Again, depending on numbers, groups will be the leisurely, intermediate, and extremers. While the aim is not to race but to see the sights, there may be some in the group who are interested in pushing through the trail. Everyone can ride at their own pace.
First Aid and Support
Riders are encouraged to carry a First Aid Kit. TOCA rep will hold a First Aid if required.
Carriage of Bikes
Individuals will need to arrange the carriage of their bikes in their vehicles. You will need to either fit your bikes in your vehicle, use a bike rack, or carry your bikes in a trailer (we have a tow bar on our M3). Alternatively, you can hire a bike from Beechworth (Tour Hire Shuttle | Cycle | Victoria's High Country (ridehighcountry.com.au) ). Plenty of time to have a tow bar installed too using one of our business partners ;)
Depart Canberra on Friday 29 September 2023 to meet other State TOCA members in Yackandandah at lunch time on Friday. Return Monday 2 October 2023 (or optional Sunday 1 October 2023). Weekenders and day trippers also welcome. We will put out timings throughout the day for people wishing to join the group at any stage.
